Multimedia Poll : What is important for OpenSolaris

Programs I Love

I use Adobe acroread, Google Chrome, Google Earth, Google Gears, mplayer( available), Skype( text, voice, and video), Cisco VPN Client( or vpnc a close substitute).

Of these, Skype with text, voice, and video would be the most valuable.

Totem Multimedia Plugin

I think that what OpenSolaris needs almost as badly as decent DVD playback (libdvdcss or fluendo), is a package to add more functionality to the Totem browser plugin. I say this because I do a lot of TV and movie watching on letmewatchthis.com (free, even to join, and you don't have to!), and many of the videos require the DivX plugin. I know that on many Linux varieties, the Totem plugin can handle this, given the proper codecs, and I didn't pay for Fluendo for nothing, lol.
Thanks!

vpnc is missing

I think that it will be great to have functional vpnc package for OpenSolaris. In contrib or somewhere.Only answer from Sun people is - Use IPsec.Pfff what an answer ! A lot of companies use Cisco and if you have possibility to choose another OS you can switch only to Linux or BSD.Solaris/OpenSolaris is not solution, because vpnc is not running. There is some setup on the web,but in most case it doesn't run because routes are misconfigured completly.Even developers of vpnc have in comments in vpnc executable some "bad" words about Solaris route settings :-)

my "other" vote

skype --- voip features

F-Spot

F-Spot for Solaris would be really nice to have.

asf plugins

I'm have been struggling for a few days with AMF decoder. gst-plugins-ugly compiles, but totem dies on opening .wma files...

RE : asf plugins

I assume you mean ASF? I added your vote to the Free GStreamer Playback Plugins and included asf and wma in the detail for that item. Have you tried the MBLgst-plugin-ffmpeg package detailed here. The FFMPEG plugin should include asf and wma support, see below.

$ gst-inspect
..
ffmpeg: ffmux_asf: FFMPEG asf Muxer
ffmpeg: ffdemux_asf: FFMPEG ASF format demuxer
ffmpeg: ffdec_wmv3: FFMPEG Windows Media Video 9 decoder
ffmpeg: ffdec_wmv2: FFMPEG Windows Media Video 8 decoder
ffmpeg: ffdec_wmv1: FFMPEG Windows Media Video 7 decoder
ffmpeg: ffenc_wmv2: FFMPEG Windows Media Video 8 encoder
ffmpeg: ffenc_wmv1: FFMPEG Windows Media Video 7 encoder
ffmpeg: ffdec_wmav2: FFMPEG Windows Media Audio 2 decoder
ffmpeg: ffdec_wmav1: FFMPEG Windows Media Audio 1 decoder
ffmpeg: ffenc_wmav2: FFMPEG Windows Media Audio 2 encoder
ffmpeg: ffenc_wmav1: FFMPEG Windows Media Audio 1 encoder
..

RE : asf plugins

Apparently the FFMPEG plugin isn't enough. I've just published the ASF plugin in my repository. You will need MBLgst-plugin-asf and MBLgst-plugin-ffmpeg to play ASF files.

just one?!

So hard to pick just one in there, I think DVD playback is the big one for desktop users...with Fluendo filling the void in the commercially licensed space and your libdvdcss, nav, etc packages proving the functionality for those who don't have the cash or for various reasons are opposed to proprietary platrforms, patents and so on.

Monitor calibration

Perhaps not directly multimedia.
But it would be nice to have on solaris also.

Video Player

Nero Video Player (I know only vlc, which is not easy to use for watching tv-recordings)
DVB-S/C/T Recording (Technisat, Technotrend, whatever works)
